Mr Philip Carne MBE Admitted as Magdalene Pepys Benefactor Fellow

The College is pleased to announce the admission of Mr Philip Carne MBE (1958) as a Pepys Benefactor Fellow. We are delighted to honour and recognise Mr Carne's longstanding generous engagement with the College by admitting him as an Honorary Fellow.

Mr Carne's commitment to Magdalene spans several decades and he has generously supported his College for 30 years. He matriculated in 1958 to study Modern and Medieval Languages and later embarked on a long and distinguished career at Johnson & Johnson eventually serving as the Company Group Chairman.

His immense generosity has been pivotal in supporting students with numerous bursaries, enhancing the College’s access and outreach programs, and contributing to important capital projects at Magdalene such as Edwards Court, and the New Library. Most recently, he has established a fund for supporting students studying languages in their Year Abroad, removing financial barriers for students pursuing language studies and ensuring that no one is deterred from reading languages because of the additional costs associated with the Year Abroad.

Sir Christopher Greenwood, Master of Magdalene, expressed his delight in welcoming Mr Carne to the Fellowship:

“I am delighted to be installing Philip Carne as a Pepys Benefactor Fellow.  He has done so much for the College over the years and we are particularly grateful for his support of language students in their year abroad.  We hope to see him here often.”
