Season's Greetings from all at Magdalene
Dear Members and Friends,
Although this is my third Christmas message as Master, it is the first one where the traditional wish for a “Happy Christmas” has not been blighted by COVID-19. After two years of cancellations and restrictions, the College is finally (almost) back to normal. Teaching is once more overwhelmingly being conducted in person, Freshers’ Week, the Matriculation Dinner, the Welcome Dinner for new postgraduates, the admission of scholars and new Fellows all went ahead and it was a delight to be back in our candlelit Hall once again. In the best Cambridge tradition of going from Advent to Christmas in less than a week, we had an excellent Advent Carol Service, followed by a Christmas Carol Service five days later – both of which were packed out with people standing in the Organ Loft of the Chapel. We were also able to hold our traditional Christmas concert in London for the first time since 2019 with our choir again giving their third wonderful performance in a week.
One benefit to have come out of COVID-19 is that events of this kind are not taken for granted as they too frequently were in the past. The College community held together with a remarkable level of mutual support during the last three years. That has made it all the more of a delight to see the College enjoying – and relishing more than ever – all that we are once again able to do together.
It is thus a particular pleasure to wish you all a Happy Christmas and a very good 2023.
Sir Christopher Greenwood
Master
