MA Day for 2014 matriculands

-

Due to the pandemic we regrettably had to cancel the MA Day for 2014 matriculands, which was due to take place in May 2021. We are now delighted to invite back those Members who matriculated with an undergraduate degree in October 2014 to receive their M.A. on Saturday 20th May 2023. This date is also open to other College members wishing to graduate in person to other Higher Degrees (i.e. MPhil, PhD, MBA etc.). Please note, there is an administrative charge of £30 for those wishing to take the MA Cantab (both in person or in absence)

Programme

There will be a graduation photograph, after which in-person graduands will be briefed by the Praelector and get in order in Cripps Court before processing to Senate House for the congregation. After the ceremony there will be a buffet lunch in College for graduands and their guests.

The precise time of the ceremony varies from year to year and we will not know the exact timetable of proceedings until the Tuesday preceding the ceremony. Attendees will be informed as soon as the schedule is confirmed. It is expected that the programme for the day will begin any time from 10.00am.

Accommodation and guests

A maximum of two guests per graduand are permitted in Senate House and at the College buffet lunch. Please provide details of the number of guests you will be bringing when booking.

Guest places at Senate House are free of charge, however there is a fee of £15 per guest at the College buffet lunch. Please ensure you book any guest places at the lunch by 9am on Friday 5 May at the latest via the online booking form here: www.magd.cam.ac.uk/graduation-guest-payment.

Requests for additional guest places may be made to congregations@magd.cam.ac.uk, and any space tickets will be allocated at the discretion of the College.

Unfortunately it is not possible to offer accommodation in College for MA Day attendees as the ceremony takes place during Full Term and undergraduates are in residence.

Apply to take your MA

We regret to inform you that due to the large number of graduands being presented at Senate House during Easter Term the University has capped the number of people which Magdalene may submit on each occasion. We have now reached the maximum limit for in person graduands at our MA Day ceremony.

It is however still possible to take your MA in absence on this date, and, given the cap on numbers this year, those forced to graduate in absence are still welcome to attend the Garden Party celebration in College with up to two guests.

  • To register to graduate in absence and also join the buffet lunch celebration on the day please contact congregations@magd.cam.ac.uk.
  • Should you wish to graduate in absence on this date and NOT attend the celebration in College, please complete the 'in absence' application form, which can be found here

Academic dress and gown hire for MA Day (In Person Graduands ONLY)

All information relating to academic dress and links to Cambridge gown hire companies can be found here.

The majority of M.A. Graduands will wear the B.A. gown and B.A. hood. If you already have a degree of the University higher than the B.A. (i.e. MPhil), you will wear the corresponding gown and hood. Undergraduate gowns must NOT be worn. If you are in any doubt about which gown and hood you need to wear for the ceremony, it is recommended that you seek advice from one of the gown hire companies listed at the link above.

Taking your M.A. at another ceremony

If you are unable to attend the MA Day, you are welcome to take your M.A. in absence at any other ceremony in the Senate House schedule, or in person on the days designated for the presentation of Magdalene candidates. Please see here for further dates and links to the necessary application form.

After receiving your M.A.

Once you have been admitted to the M.A. degree, you are entitled to dine at High Table once in each Full Term free of charge (except for wine). Full details of your dining rights, and other privileges available to alumni, can be found here.
