Supporting Undergraduates

The Undergraduate Bursary Scheme at Magdalene.

The Magdalene Undergraduate Bursary Scheme has been operating successfully since its introduction in response to the higher fee structure in 2012. The scheme has been generously financed by Members and Friends as committed to the principle of needs blind admission as we are.

The donations we receive have ensured that many of our undergraduates have been supported with full or partial bursaries to enable them to enjoy everything Magdalene and Cambridge have to offer. It is thanks to these continued contributions that the College can actively promote its belief that no one should be deterred from applying to study at Magdalene because of financial concerns.

We have been raising funds to support every undergraduate in need of help for almost a decade now and year on year, almost 20 per cent of Magdalene Members and Friends choose to make a gift to their College. We are grateful and delighted that so many of you support us in ensuring that all our students can focus on their time at Magdalene free from constant financial worry. The Rowan and Jane Williams Bursary Fund

In 2020 Magdalene College launched The Rowan and Jane Williams Bursary Fund in honour of the former Master Dr Rowan Williams and Lady Williams and to mark their wonderful contribution to the College.

The fund will endow, in perpetuity, up to three annual bursaries for Magdalene undergraduates up to a value of £5,000 per annum.

The Carne MML Fund

Mr Philip Carne (1958) has generously established The Carne MML Fund in support of language students undertaking a Year Abroad as part of the Modern and Medieval Languages (MML), History and Modern Languages (H&ML), and Asian and Middle Eastern Studies (AMES) undergraduate courses.

The fund's purpose is to encourage applications from all language enthusiasts, regardless of their financial circumstances, to address financial difficulties experienced by students during their Year Abroad and to ensure that no potential applicant is deterred by the additional costs.
