Medical Society Dinner 2023
The Master, Medical Fellows, and Development Director are delighted to invite current and former Medical students, alumni who work in the medical profession, and their guests, to the Magdalene Medical Society Dinner on Saturday 21 January 2023.
We are honoured that the after dinner speaker on this occasion will be former Fellow and Director of Studies in Medical Sciences, Professor David Cooper MD PhD FRCS.
Professor Cooper is on the faculty of the Center for Transplantation Sciences at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School, where he leads a xenotransplantation research group. During his surgical training he was appointed supervisor in anatomy at Magdalene College and was elected a Fellow in 1972. At various times, he spent short periods as a ship’s surgeon, a surgeon in a rural mission hospital in India, and as a flying doctor to isolated Native American communities in central Canada. In 1980, he was appointed to the cardiothoracic surgical faculty at the University of Cape Town Medical School in South Africa, where he divided his time between clinical surgery and research. In 1987 he relocated to the USA, and since 1996, he has concentrated his time on research into xenotransplantation. He has published more than 1,000 medical and scientific papers and chapters and has co-edited seven major textbooks. The experimental work that led to the first gene-edited pig heart transplant at the University of Maryland at Baltimore in 2022 was funded in part by an NIH research grant of which he was the principal investigator.
